Daniel Coyle writes in “The Culture Code” about seeking three things when building successful culture based on belonging and not fear:
1. Are we connected?
2. Do we share a common goal?
3. Are we safe?
If this is combined with Brené Brown’s advice to avoid all or nothing and “me vs you” thinking, we can quickly guide how to improve and change a group’s culture with simple questions and observations.
Now, take a look at your school, your team, your business, your group.
Are people connecting personally or are they hiding from each other?
Do you have policies that bring people together and encourage
critical & creative thought/learning/ambition
or do they encourage secrets/fear/following/stagnation?
Are you trying to make it all go one way (your way)
or
do you want to know as many options as possible?
When you watch your people interact, what do you see?
Are they ever close enough to touch?
Do they smile?
Do they make contact with simple handshakes or hugs?
Once you think about these things. You’ll know if you’re building performance through belonging or if you’re driving towards fear.
